With family fortunes at the beginning of the twentieth century that could match European royalty, this definitely made a statement. And this was just a “summer cottage.”

The Breakers Mansion of the Vanderbilts, in Rhode Island.

It was purchased by the Preservation Society of Newport County from their heirs in 1972, and is designated a National Historic Landmark.

A slice of history preserved for posterity.
