It Bloomed for Valentine’s Day

I have been watching this rosebud for a few days. The other blooms were starting to wilt so this would have been the one to bloom on Valentine’s Day. But it didn’t look promising.

It looked stunted and was getting frayed in places.

But yesterday it started to open, as if trying to beat the odds, like lovers in a romantic tragedy.

“If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking and you beat love down.”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

It seemed to be struggling, but it was showing some potential.

Then today it bloomed. This imperfect bud blooming into a rose, if only for a day, proclaiming itself.

“Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

It was still imperfect, but no less a pleasant surprise. Like love, perhaps, that can surprise us in so many ways, often coming through despite imperfections and struggles.

“Love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, sick and healthy, asleep and awake- it’s everything except what it is!”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

Happy Heart’s Day!
