Celebrating With Colors: Red and Green

The Christmas season has been associated with the colors red and green for centuries.

Evergreen plants were used to brighten up buildings and homes in the dead of winter. Red decorations were used in religious traditions but really burst into the modern scene with the jolly Santa Claus in red robes.

Pointsettias, with their red and green combination of bracts and leaves have become a popular Christmas decoration. Their coloration is created by a daily period of uninterrupted long, dark nights (in a greenhouse covered completely) followed by bright sunny days.

The sight of pointsettias is a sure sign that Christmas celebrations have started.

May this be a colorful season to all!
